Owls finish second
Rice saw all four of its entries finish in the top 15, but could not hold back a strong effort by Nebraska as the Cornhuskers captured the 2021 CSCAA Collegiate National Open Water Championship in Lawrence, Kansas on Friday.
Shannon Campbell finished fifth to lead the Owls followed by Sydney Morgan (12th), Shannon Jelley (14th) and Amelia Kane (15th). Team scores were generated by combining each team's top three finishers place in the standings and Campbell, Morgan and Jelley's placings gave the Owls 31 points. Nebraska won with 17 thanks to a pair of finishes in the top four. Purdue (39), Southern Illinois (57) and Kansas (59) rounded out the top five.
"It was a very good morning," Rice head coach Seth Huston said. "To have all four swimmers in the top 15 is fantastic. Shannon Campbell made a great move at the ¾ mark and moved up four spots over the next 1000 meters and just missed a fourth place finish at the end."
Rice has competed in the event in each of its five years and has never finished lower than second, highlighted by winning the championship in 2091.
The Owls will open the collegiate season on October 15 when they host Houston for the first of two days of racing at the Rice Competition Pool.
