
Enechukwu Named to Wuerffel Trophy Watch List

College football's premier award for community service
Ikenna Enechukwu is one of 93 players from college football's Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) on he watch list for The Wuerffel Trophy, college football's premier award for community service as announced today.
Named after 1996 Heisman Trophy winning quarterback from the University of Florida, Danny Wuerffel, the Wuerffel Trophy is presented in February annually in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The trophy exists to honor college football players who serve others, celebrate their positive impact on society, and inspire greater service in the world.
Enechukwu heads into his third season as part of the Owls main rotation along the defensive front having played in 16 of the last 17 games and making three starts. He was third on the team in 2019 with 4.5 tackles for loss.
Of the field, he has been one of the most active Owls in the campus community. He is the current chair of the Student Association Athletics Committee and a site leader in the Urban Immersion project which introduces incoming students to the principles of civic leadership, ethical community engagement, and to the City of Houston with the guiding mission of fostering the growth of informed and passionate advocates for social justice. He is member of the Black Male Leadership Initiative, the Rice African Student Association and the Rice Athletics Pre-Medical Society. He also volunteers at Houston Methodist Hospital and had a project selected to be featured in the Undergraduate Research Symposium this past spring.
Nominations for the Wuerffel Trophy are made by the respective universities' Sports Information Departments and will close on October 15. An up to date list of nominees can be found at www.wuerffeltrophy.org beginning on August 1. Semifinalists for the award will be announced on November 2 and finalists will be announced on November 22.
The formal announcement of the 2021 recipient will be made on December 9 and the presentation of the 2021 Wuerffel Trophy will occur in February 2022 in Fort Walton Beach.
Enechukwu and the Owls open play on September 4 on the road at Arkansas and open their 2021 home schedule the following week with the 40th Bayou Bucket vs. Houston.
