
Total of 12 Owls Earn USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

NEW ORLEANS - A total of 12 Rice University student-athletes were recognized as U.S. Track & Field Cross Country Association (USTFCCCA) All-Academic honorees, an award that honors those who excel both in meets and in the classroom, the organization announced Thursday (7/22).
In addition to the individual accolades, both the Rice men's and women's teams were recognized for Team Academic Awards. Under head coach Jim Bevan, the Rice women posted a 3.54 GPA while the men's squad under head coach Jon Warren earned a 3.47 GPA. In order to qualify for team recognition a program must finish with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 scale.
This year's Rice individual honorees included Grace Forbes (Sports Medicine & Exercise Physiology), Erna Gunnarsdottir (Kinesiology), Maryam Hassan (Global Affairs), Julie Perez (Earth Science) and Tara Simpson-Sullivan (Psychology) on the women's side. The Rice men receiving recognition were Andrew Abikhaled (Neuroscience), Ese Amata (Undeclared), Corbett Fong (Mechanical Engineering), Shaun Kerry (Undeclared), Hociel Landa (Mechanical Engineering), and Samuel Woodley (German Studies).

Division I Track & Field All-Academic Teams
- The cumulative GPA (not 2020-21 academic year, not semester) for all student-athletes on the institution's NCAA Squad List for Indoor and/or Outdoor Track and Field must be 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale, including the most recent grading period, certifiable by either NCAA Faculty Rep or NCAA Compliance Coordinator or Registrar's Office. Institutions utilizing a different GPA scale must convert the GPA to a 4.0 scale using the standard conversion method [GPA/Scale x 4.0].
- The cumulative GPA of all student-athletes on the institution's NCAA Squad List for Indoor and/or Outdoor Track and Field must be computed by the following method:
- Total the cumulative number of semester hours or quarter hours earned for all student-athletes on the NCAA Squad List, including the most recent grading period;
- Total the cumulative number of quality points (GPA multiplied by the number of credit hours) earned by all student-athletes on the NCAA Squad List, including the most recent grading period;
- Divide the cumulative number of quality points earned by the cumulative number of semester or quarter hours earned.
