
Abdel-Aziz Wins 2021 Giammalva Award

Graduating senior Mohamed Abdel-Aziz has been named the 2021 winner of the Giammalva Award, presented annually to the MVP of the Rice men's tennis team.
Abdel-Aziz matched his career high with 11 wins in singles to lead the Owls, closing the year with an 11-6 mark. He posted a 3-2 record in Conference USA action, 3-0 in three-set matches and won five matches at both the second and third lines. He fashioned a pair of five-match winning streaks during the season and was na imed the C-USA Men's Tennis Athlete of the Week for the period ending April 11.
He was a four-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and a two-time Rice Honor Athlete.
The Giammalva Award is named after former men's tennis coach Sam Giammalva (1959-72) who twice led Rice to a second place finish at the NCAA Championship (1968 & 1970), inaugurated the annual Rice Invitationa and spearheaded construction of the Jake Hess Tennis Stadium, the home of Rice Tennis from 1971-2014.
