Langley Named New Head Coach at Washington
HOUSTON – Rice Director of Athletics Joe Karlgaard announced on Monday he will conduct a national search to identify the next head coach of the Rice Women's Basketball team after former coach Tina Langley accepted the head coaching position at the University of Washington.
"We are grateful to Coach Langley for her terrific leadership as our head coach. She built an elite basketball program over her six-year career, and I'm certain she will drive similar success in the future. She will always be part of the Rice family, and we wish her the very best at Washington.
We have an incredible foundation in place for women's basketball, including a winning program, top-notch student-athletes, strong university and alumni support, and a world-class institution. As we look for the next leader of our program, we are in a prime position to attract the very best coaches in college basketball to Rice University."
Langley leaves Rice having recorded the highest winning percentage in program history (.673) and a 126-61 overall record. Under her guidance the Owls won two postseason championships, including this year's WNIT in which the Owls went 5-0 and defeated each team by double-digits. The Owls also won the WBI Championship in 2017.
Under Langley's guidance the Owls won three consecutive (2019-21) Conference USA titles and reached the 20-win plateau in five consecutive seasons (22, 23, 28, 21 and 23).
During that stretch the Owls went 117-39 (.750) and played in the postseason four times, the lone exception being 2020 when the Owls were set to be the C-USA representative at the NCAA Tournament but it was canceled due to COVID-19.
In 2018-19, the Owls went 28-4 and won both the C-USA regular season and tournament titles. They were the first team in Conference USA history to go undefeated throughout the regular season and conference tournament before advancing to the NCAA Tournament.
Under Langley's tutelage the Owls produced a WNBA Draft Pick in guard Erica Ogwumike, who was a two-time C-USA Player of the Year, and the three-time C-USA Defensive Player of the Year in center Nancy Mulkey. In total, the Owls produced nine all-conference selections.
