Next Up: @FIU April 2
Austin: The 27th ranked Rice women's tennis saw its hopes of an upset win over No. 2 Texas dashed as the Longhorns fought off a strong challenge in doubles to roll to a 4-0 win at the Texas Tennis Center on Saturday.
Doubles: Hoping to become the second Rice team to venture into Austin and defeat a second-ranked Longhorn opponent in the last two weeks, the Owls started fast in doubles, jumping to 3-0 leads at the second two lines. Anna Bowtell and Victoria Smirnova saw their lead shrink as Texas rallied to tie it 4-4 before winning the last two games. But the Longhorns followed with wins at the first two lines to take the early lead.
Singles: Texas never allowed the Owls a stage a rally, capturing all six first sets in singles and racing to wins at the second, fifth and sixth lines to improve to 15-1 on the season.
Elizabeth Schmidt: "We had chances in doubles and played a solid doubles point overall. In singles, Texas was relentless with their physicality and, outside of Mickie's court, we could never sink our teeth into the match. We'll get back to work this week and I am confident we will take the experience of today and use it to continue to grow as we head into April."
Up Next: The Owls return to the road next weekend with a pair of matches in Miami, Florida. They will face C-USA rival FIU on Friday at 11 a.m. (central).
