First Of Four Weekend Games At Reckling Park
HOUSTON — Visiting UTSA registered a 16-4 Conference USA win over the Rice Baseball team in seven innings in the C-USA opener for both teams Friday evening at Reckling Park.
UTSA was quick to jump on the offensive for five runs in the top of the first inning, of which two were earned due to an Owl fielding error to start the frame. Rice came right back with four runs in the bottom of the inning. The first of two big hits was a three-run homer to right field by Guy Garibay. Cade Edwards followed with a solo blast to left-center that put Rice right back in the game at 5-4.
The Roadrunners proceeded to add 11 runs over the next three innings to extend the lead to 16-4. The contest concluded after the Owls batted in the bottom of the seventh. UTSA finished the night with five home runs by three players.
For The Record
Rice is now 11-10 overall and 0-1 in C-USA league play. UTSA improved to 9-7 on the year and 1-0 in conference.
Let's Play Two Saturday
The same teams continue the weekend series thru March 28. C-USA's new four-game format for league series features a double-header of two 7-inning games on Saturday. The teams close out the weekend with a nine inning game on Sunday.
Notes & Stats
• The Owls finished with ten hits. It was the eighth time this season for Rice to have double-digit hits.
• Garibay's home run was his fourth of the season to move into a tie for the team lead. He's now second on the squad with 14 RBI.
• The home runs by Garibay and Edwards were the first time the Owls had hit two round-trippers in an inning since facing Middle Tennessee in 2019. That was also the last time Owl players (Cade Edwards and Dominic Cox) had hit back-to-back homers.
• Braden Comeaux went 2-for-4 to record his team-leading tenth multi-hit game.
• In the bottom of the sixth Ben Dukes came off the bench to record his first career pinch-hit.
• A total of four Rice pitchers saw action, highlighted by true freshman Micah Davis' career-best 3.0 scoreless innings. He had two strikeouts and no walks.
