Host UTA on Thursday
New Orleans: The 34th ranked Rice women's tennis team fought off a stern test from an old Conference USA foe, downing Tulane 4-3 at the City Park Tennis Center on Saturday. Making her first appearance at the second line, freshman Federica Trevisan snapped a 3-3 tie with a straight set win to deliver her fifth clinch point of the dual season. The win was the Owls eighth in a row overall and their ninth straight over the Green Wave in the first meeting between the schools since 2015.
Doubles: Maria Budin and Diae El Jardi held off a late charge from Tulane to improve to 9-2 with a 7-5 win to clinch the first point for the Owls. They jumped out to a 4-1 lead only to see the Green Wave tie it at 5-5. After Tulane had taken the early advantage with a win at the third line, Michaela Haet and Trevisan found themselves locked in a tight match at the second line before winning the final two games to win 6-4.
Singles: The teams split the six first sets of singles, setting the stage for the remainder of the day as each time the Green Wave pulled even, the Owls would answer with a win to retake the lead. Linda Huang broke a 1-1 tie a straight set win at the sixth line in her first singles appearance of the spring. Anna Bowtell answered Tulane's second win with her seventh singles win of the season to put Rice in front 3-2, leaving the final outcome to the first two lines. Trevisan ground out a tiebreak win in her first set and then wrapped up the match with a 6-2 win in the second set to improve to 9-1 this spring.
