
Texas State Defeats Rice Wednesday In San Marcos

Owls Return Home To Host Southern Friday Night
SAN MARCOS, Texas — Texas State scored 12 runs in one inning on the way to a 16-5 win in seven innings over the visiting Rice baseball team Wednesday evening at the Bobcat Ballpark in San Marcos, Texas.
Heading into the contest Rice had allowed just one run in its previous two games, but Texas State was quick on the scoreboard with three in the bottom of the first inning. The Bobcats then exploded for 12 runs in the fourth for a 15-0 advantage. The Owls were able to plate a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth inning before Texas State added a run in the sixth to make it 16-4. Rice pushed across one final score in the top of the seventh for a 16-5 final.
For The Record
Rice is now to 8-8 on the season. Texas State improved to 8-10.
• Rice holds a 61-21 lead in the all-time series between the teams, but Texas State extended its current win streak in this series to seven-straight. The Blue & Gray have not won in San Marcos since 2016.
• In March of last season No. 2 ranked Texas Tech defeated Rice 19-12.
• Redshirt freshman Connor Walsh knocked his second home run of the season in the top of the fifth
• Freshman Garrett Zaskoda made his first career start for Rice and worked 3.0 innings.
• Five Owls saw action out of the bullpen, including Dillon Janack, Cristian Cienfuegos, Josh Larzabal, Johnny Hoyle and Micah Davis. A total of Rice 20 players saw action in the game.
• Veteran Cade Edwards batted in the leadoff spot for the first time this season.
On Deck
Rice returns home to Reckling Park to begin a three-game homestand on Friday, March 19. The Owls welcome Southern University for the first baseball meeting between the respective programs. The series is three games and will not include a Saturday double-header as was previously listed. First pitch Friday against the Jaguars is set for 6 pm.
