Owls advance five to Sunday's finals
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Rice Owls women's track and field team capped day one of the Conference USA Indoor Championships in style by winning the distance medley relay behind the strength of anchor leg and sophomore Grace Forbes. The All-American ran a flat 4:37 to help the group of Alyssa Balandran, Lindsay Simms and Sara Ivackovic take the top spot on the podium with a winning time of 11:56.18.
The Owls also received an all-conference performance from sophomore thrower Tara Simpson-Sullivan in the weight throw, earning a spot on the medal stand for a second straight indoor season with a third place (18.28m) result despite limited practices.
Other Owls to earn points on Saturday included freshman Eliza Kraule in the pentathlon and junior Ali Goodson in the pole vault. Competing in her first collegiate event, Kraule placed fifth overall with 3431 points while Goodson battled back from injuries to clear 3.71m (12-02.00) in the pole vault, placing sixth overall in her final indoor meet.
Forbes and Balandran each qualified for Sunday's finals in the mile by placing second (5:04.49) and fifth (5:03.89), respectively, on Saturday. Sprinter Justice Coute-McCullum ran a lifetime best time of 8.69 to qualify for Sunday's 60m hurdle finals while freshman Gal Kadmon advanced with an eight place result (25.11) in the 200m in her first race on a banked track. Taigen Hunter-Galvan also punched a ticket to Sunday's finals in the 800m with a seventh place qualifying time of 2:16.55.
"I'm extremely happy and proud of our team today since this is almost the one year anniversary of us competing at a live meet," Rice head coach Jim Bevan said. "We're continuing to learn as we go during this process and we're competing exceptionally hard."
