Owls place fourth as a team
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Rice sophomore distance runner and All-American Grace Forbes added to her already spectacular career with a pair of individual titles on the final day of the Conference USA Indoor Championships on Sunday. Forbes broke both a school and C-USA meet record in the mile with a winning time of 4:37.53, breaking Lennie Waite's school record of 4:38.60 set in 2009. Forbes' mark, which ranks 11th in the NCAA this season, also bested the C-USA meet record (4:39.61), held by former Owl Katie Jensen in 2017.
Not satisfied, Forbes added her second indoor title of the day and third of her career by winning the 3000m in 9:18.76, the 25th-best mark in the NCAA this season.
Also earning a spot on the top spot of the medal stand was thrower Erna Gunnarsdottir, who set an Icelandic record with a winning throw of 16.95m (55-07.50) in the shot put. That measurement ranks ninth in the NCAA this season and gives Gunnarsdottir a great shot at qualifying for the NCAA Championships.
The Owls also received a pair of fourth place finishes from Justice Coutee-McCullum (60m hurdles; 8.74) and Taigen Hunter-Galvan (800m; 25:30), each of whom set a personal best mark. KC Nwadei totaled 4.5 points for the owls by placing sixth and seventh, respectively, in the high jump (1.64m) and triple jump (11.96m). Ginnie Okafor also set a lifetime best in the triple jump (12.11m-5th) while Morgan Fey scored in her first meet in the shot put (6th-12.89m). Freshman Gal Kadmon also picked up a point in the 200m (8th-25.30), the first time she's ever competed at an indoor venue.
As a team the Owls placed fourth overall with 75.50, behind champion Southern Miss (109), Charlotte (104) and UTSA (81).
"This was our first meet in a year and we experienced a lot of different things," Rice head coach Jim Bevan said. "I'd love to come back here next week and do it all over again. We've got a great team and great group, we just need some more meets under our belts. We weren't really sure where we stood as a team coming in, especially since we hadn't had true training in the last 10 days because of the weather. We're definitely thankful for the bubble, it helped us be able to compete this weekend."
