Owls Make Outdoor Debut at Longhorn Invitational

Fokam, Simpson-Sullivan star
AUSTIN - The Rice Owls women's track and field team made their 2021 outdoor season debut on Saturday, finishing second in team scoring at the University of Texas' Longhorn Invitational.
Sophomore thrower Tara Simpson-Sullivan made the most out of her first-ever outdoor competition, breaking the school record in the hammer throw with a monster throw of 63.33m (207-9) on her third attempt. Simpson-Sullivan bested Dreu Dixson's 2017 record of 56.92m and took the early No. 2 mark in the NCAA outdoor season. The Penrith, England native was coming off of a third place all-conference performance in the weight throw at the NCAA Indoor Championships.
Senior Michelle Fokam also made her much-anticipated season debut and nearly matched her PR in the triple jump, winning the competition with a leap of 13.46m (44-2.00). She also was the second-best collegiate performer in the long jump, recording a mark of 6.12m (20-1.00).
Other highlights included a second place PR from vaulter Ali Goodson, who set a personal best mark by clearing 3.75m (12-3.50). In other field events, thrower Julie Perez posted a third place result in the hammer throw (49.13m) and was fourth in the discus (47.30) while KC Nwadei placed fifth in the triple jump (12.14m) and was sixth in the high jump (1.66m).
Sprinter Justice Coutee-McCullum made a strong debut by running a 14.18 in the 100m hurdles, the second-fastest time among collegiate runners.
The Owls will be back in action this Tuesday when they host the Rice Invitational from Wendel D. Ley Track and Holloway Field.
