Owls Return to Host WKU
For the first time in 27 days the Rice Owls women's basketball returns to action this weekend for a pair of games against the WKU Lady Toppers. Rice has seen their last six scheduled games postponed due to a combination of COVID-19 protocols and injuries. Undefeated in C-USA play, the Owls still sit in first place in the West Division with eight games left in the regular season.
Among the Nation's Best
Despite not taking the floor for nearly four weeks, the Owls are still getting recognition in both national Top-25 polls. For a fifth straight week Rice is receiving votes (2) in the Associated Press Top-25 Poll and this week made their season debut in the USA Today/WBCA Coaches Poll with a pair of votes.
Conference Dominance
The Owls have won 41 of their last 43 contests against C-USA opponents dating back to 2018. Rice has won 11 straight in league play, tied for the 6th-longest active conference win streak in the NCAA. Last season Rice pushed their conference winning streak to 30 straight wins over C-USA opponents before it was snapped, the longest in league history.
Defending Home Court
The Owls have won 15 straight at Tudor Fieldhouse, tied for the 6th-longest active streak in the NCAA. Rice went 13-1 at home last season. Over the last three-plus seasons, Rice is 43-2 at home and have won 20 consecutive C-USA games at Tudor.
Let It Fly
Entering play this weekend the Owls rank second in the NCAA in three-point percentage (40.7%). Five different Owls are shooting 35% or better from beyond the arc, led by Haylee Swayze (48.3).
No Points for You
Defensively the Owls rank 7th in the NCAA in opponents' field goal percentage (33.3) and are surrendering just 56.7 points per game, which ranks 29th in the NCAA.
Mulkey Madness
Rice senior center Nancy Mulkey was named to a pair of national watch lists this week, starting with the Lisa Leslie Award Top-10 Watch List, which honors the top 10 centers in the NCAA. The annual award in its fourth year recognizes the top centers in women's NCAA Division I college basketball. The Cypress, Texas native anchors a Rice defense that is surrendering a league-low 56.7 points per contest.
In addition, Mulkey was also named to the Senior CLASS Award Watch List, which stands for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School ®, the Senior CLASS Award focuses on the total student-athlete and encourages students to use their platform in athletics to make a positive impact as leaders in their communities.
