Owls Close Homestand with Pacific
The Owls put a bow on their five-game homestand to start the season this Wednesday when they host the Pacific Tigers at 1 p.m. from Tudor Fieldhouse. Rice holds a 2-0 lead in the all-time series with Pacific and will be facing the Tigers for the first time since the 1991-92 season. Rice is 2-2 on the season and is coming off a 68-48 loss to Oklahoma State while Pacific is 2-3 and has dropped three of their last four contests, including an 81-61 road loss at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi on Monday.
Scouting Pacific
The Tigers were picked to finish 10th in the WCC Preseason Poll and welcomed in six newcomers. Freshman point guard Anaya James currently ranks 16th in the NCAA in total assists (28) and is fourth in the WCC in total steals (11). James also leads the team in scoring (11.8 ppg). Through five games the Tigers are averaging 69.8 points per game on 43 percent shooting while surrendering 65.0 points per contest on 36.8 percent from the field.
Last Time Out
A short-handed team put up a valiant effort against the Oklahoma State Cowgirls last Saturday afternoon at Tudor Fieldhouse but ultimately dropped a 68-48 decision. Rice was forced to play just seven players due to injuries against a Cowgirls (3-1) team that had 15 players enter the contest. The Owls were led by sophomore Ashlee Austin, who came up just short of her first career double-double with a game-high 17 points and nine rebounds in 31 minutes.
Austin Powering Owls
Sophomore forward Ashlee Austin is having a career season thus far, her third with the Owls. The Johns Creek, Ga. native has scored in double-figures in each of Rice's four contests and is averaging 16.8 points (4th in C-USA) on 55.3 percent shooting (2nd in C-USA), along with 7.3 rebounds per game, all of which are career-highs.
Crosthwait a Steady Hand
Rice's lone returning starter Katelyn Crosthwait has provided the needed scoring punch for the Owls through the first four games of the season, registering double-figures in each contest. The Purcell, Okla. native ranks second among all C-USA players in three-point field goals made (12) and three-point field goals per game (3.0). She also ranks eighth in C-USA in three-point field goal percentage (31.6).
