NEW ORLEANS, La. — Max Fielder and Chris Mullins each recorded double-doubles to lead Rice to an 83-78 victory at New Orleans, Friday night at Lakefront Arena.
The Story
The teams traded baskets through the first five minutes with a pair of three-pointers by Cameron Sheffield and Travis Evee giving Rice a 10-6 lead. However, UNO went on a 14-3 run over the next four minutes to take its largest lead of the game, 20-13. Jake Lieppert hit a three-pointer, but Tyson Jackson scored three straight points. The teams traded baskets, but the Owls turned up their play. Fiedler then scored consecutive layups as Rice went on a 12-2 run, capped off by a Lieppert triple to give Rice its largest lead of the half, 38-31, just under the four-minute mark. UNO made a jumper and Carl Pierre made one-of-two free throws before the Privateers scored five straight points to pull within one. But the Owls closed the half on a 6-0 run, including Fielder's jumper at the buzzer to send Rice into halftime with a 45-38 lead.

But over the next four minutes, New Orleans went on a 13-3 run to pull within one point. A Mullins layup followed by three-of-four free throws from Pierre and Cameron Sheffield pushed Rice's lead to five. The teams traded baskets over the next two and a half minutes. But with the Owls leading, 63-59, Evee hit his third three-pointer to send Rice on a 9-0 run as Rice took its largest lead of the game, 72-59, with 7:51 remaining. However, UNO wouldn't go away, scoring 10 of the next 11 points to pull within 73-69. But the Owls connected on eight straight free throws the rest of the way to hold on.
The Stats
Rice connected on 52.1% from the field, 37.9% from three and 78.6% from the free throw line. New Orleans shot 44.9% from the floor, but just 30.0% from three. Rice was outrebounded by the Privateers, 32-to-31.
What Scott Pera Had to Say
"That's two games in a row now where us being older has helped us. Teams make runs. Winning on the road is really hard. Adversity strikes. This group has a calmness about them. The older guards just make a really big difference. I thought Max (Fiedler) and Chris (Mullins) were tremendous with both getting double-doubles. The free throws down the stretch with Chris and Travis (Evee) knocking them in. It was just a tremendous road win against a quality UNO team."
