UTSA scored on its first three possessions and held Rice to just 102 yards of offense as the Owls fell, 45-0, Saturday night at the Alamodome.
The Story
UTSA opened the scoring on the first possession, driving 75 yards for a seven-yard touchdown run. After Rice went three-and-out, the Owls forced a UTSA field goal. Rice then went three-and-out, but Charlie Mendes' career-long 66-yard punt down the Roadrunners at their six-yard line. However, UTSA needed just three plays to score, capped by Sincere McCormick's 81-yard run. On its next possession, Rice got out to its 47-yard line, but on fourth-and-three, Jake Constantine's pass was intercepted and returned 40 yards for a touchdown. Rice put a drive together behind Ari Broussard, who ran five times for 39 yards to get the Owls to the UTSA 33. But a sack and a pair of penalties forced a Rice punt. UTSA then drove 75 yards for a touchdown as the Roadrunners took a 31-0 lead into halftime. UTSA added a pair of scores in the second half.

- P Charlie Mendes set career-highs with 10 punts and a 47.8 yard average.
- Mendes kicked a career-long 66-yard punt in the first quarter. He also had a 64-yard punt.
