Rice Drops Heartbreaker to Southern Miss, 2-1, in Double Overtime

Hattiesburg, Miss. — Ilana Izquierdo converted a penalty kick in the 105th minute and Rice fell at Southern Miss, 2-1, in double overtime, Thursday afternoon at the Southern Miss Soccer Complex.
The Details
Southern Miss had the first opportunity of the match in the fifth minute when Madisyn Flammia's shot hit the crossbar. USM had another chance in the 11th minute, but Blessing Kingsley's attempt when just past the left post. The Golden Eagles again hit the crossbar in the 20th minute when Alice Campos' attempt rang off the pipe. USM jumped out in front in the 30th minute when Kingsley split the defense and put it past a diving Bella Killgore for the first goal of the game. Rice had its first chance of the match in the 43rd minute when Delaney Schultz got the ball in the middle and sent a shot toward the bottom left corner. But, Southern Miss goalkeeper Kendell Mindnich made a diving save and the Owls went into halftime trailing 1-0.
Rice had the first chance of the second half as Caleigh Boeckx took the ball just over midfield and dribbled down the left side before sending a shot over the net. The Owls finally broke through in the 55th minute when Delaney Schultz took a pass from Catarina Albuquerque and put it into the left corner to tie the match. Southern Miss had a chance in the 73rd minute when it got in alone on a breakaway, but Killgore came out to prevent a shot as the teams went to overtime tied at one.
USM had two chances midway through the first overtime as Izquierdo's shot hit the right post and Killgore made a diving stop on Ryan Smith's rebound. In double overtime, Rice had an early chance as Albuquerque sent one toward the net. But Schultz's header was high. However, in the 105th minute, Caleigh Page was called for a penalty for tripping the Southern Miss attacker and Izquierdo converted the penalty shot, giving the Golden Eagles the victory.
