Rice Falls to UTSA in Overtime, 1-0
10/17/2021 6:04:00 PM | Women's Soccer
HOUSTON — Anna Sutter's goal in the 96th minute broke a scoreless tie and handed Rice its second straight overtime defeat, 1-0, to UTSA Sunday afternoon at Holloway Field.
The Details
UTSA had the first chance of the game when, after a Rice foul, Kendall Kloza sent a free kick toward the front of the net where Alissa Stewart was waiting. But Bella Killgore made the save on Stewart's point blank shot. Killgore was then forced to make two straight saves, but she was up to the task. Rice thought it took the lead in the 33rd minute when Mariana Elizondo appeared to score, but the Owls were called for offsides, negating the goal. Five minutes later, the Roadrunners had the best opportunity of the half when Kiran Singh's shot hit the crossbar. Despite the chances, the teams went into halftime scoreless.
Just three minutes into the second half, Serena Pham played a perfect cross from the bottom left of the field toward the front of the net. But it passed through a group of Owls who couldn't get their leg on it. Delaney Schultz then had two great chances from just in front of the net, but she wasn't able to convert. The teams battled over the next 20 minutes with neither team generating much offense. However, with 10 minutes to play, Singh had an opportunity in front of the net. But with Killgore quickly approaching, she sent the ball just past the right post and the teams headed to overtime. However in the sixth minute of the extra session, Sutter was able to slip past Madison Kent and go in on a breakaway, sliding the ball past a diving Killgore into the net for the win.
