Road swing to Tennessee up next
Baton Rouge: Rice bounced back from a tough loss to LSU earlier in the day to post a 4-2 win over New Orleans at the LSU Tennis Complex on Sunday. With the win, the Owls (2-3) won for the first time away from the George R. Brown Tennis Center in their last nine matches. Rice's last win away from home came against Charlotte in the first round of the 2019 Conference USA Championship. They were 0-4 away from home in the shortened 2020 dual season.
Doubles: The Owls improved to 4-1 in doubles thanks to wins at the first and third lines. Conrad Russell and Sumit Sarkar capped off an undefeated afternoon with a 6-1 win at the first line. Wes Barnett and Trinity Grear match that score shortly after, improving their season mark to 2-0.
Singles: Campbell Salmon pushed the Rice lead to 2-0 with a straight set win at the second line and Grear followed shortly after to push the lead to 3-0. But the Privateers stormed back with wins three and four cut the lead to 3-2 before Jacob Eskeland shook off an early break in his third set to deliver his second clinch point of the year with a three-set win at the first line.
Efe Ustundag: "We knew this was a dangerous team. They had several new players that we really didn't know anything about. Because we have a lot of guys who are battling some things, we had to make some lineup changes and put some guys in tough spots. The way we started out (winning the doubles in quick fashion), it looked like we should not have been as concerned as we were. Having Campbell and Trinity get those next two points up quickly was huge, but then they came back with two wins and all the sudden Jacob is down a break in the third set and AJ is down one in the second. But Jacob was able to break back to make it 3-3 and then he played very steady tennis and waited for his opponent to give him an opening which he did."
Up Next: The Owls continue on the road next weekend with three matches in Tennessee. The trip opens with a 5 p.m. meeting with Middle Tennessee on Friday. The Owls will face Tennessee State on Saturday and wrap up the weekend by facing Vanderbilt on Sunday.
