Football Opener with Lamar Canceled

Rice and Lamar have agreed to cancel the season-opening game between the two schools scheduled for September 26 at Rice Stadium. The meeting between the Owls and Cardinals would have been the fifth between the two schools and the first since 1987.
The game became the opener for the 2020 season after Rice moved back the start of the 2020 season to allow school administrators to continue monitoring the health situation with COVID-19 both locally and nationally, as well as evolving developments in athletic competition.
The Lamar game is the second non-conference game from the original 2020 schedule to be canceled. The Owls game with LSU, originally schedule for NRG Stadium on September 19, was canceled when the Southeastern Conference moved to conference-only schedule for this season.
Games at Houston and with Army at Rice Stadium were postponed from the original dates and the schools continue to explore options to allow them to be played.
The Owls currently have eight Conference USA games scheduled, with the conference opener set for October 3 at Marshall and the C-USA home opener with UAB the following week.
