DALLAS – Rice graduate Adolfo Carvalho was named one of 14 student-athletes to receive a 2020 Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship, as announced by Conference USA on Thursday.
The 12th annual award is named in honor of Dr. Jim Castaneda, who served Rice for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in 2008. C-USA grants the $4,000 scholarship to distinguished graduates every year as selected by the league's Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
The 2019-20 Bob Quin Award winner, Carvalho was a team captain and C-USA All-Conference performer on the men's cross country team while also running distance events in track and field. The Cockeysville, Md. native, who just completed his Masters in space studies with a 3.88 GPA, was a four-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and recorded three top-25 finishes at the C-USA Cross Country Championships.
Carvalho was named the 2020 Rice University Scholar Athlete of the Year and was the 2018 C-USA Men's Cross Country Scholar Athlete of the Year. Most recently, Carvalho earned the prestigious Fulbright Fellowship Award, which will allow him to study protoplanetary disks in Chile for nine months.
Also in late May, Carvalho was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District Team for the first time in his career.
