HOUSTON - The Rice University Athletics Communications office was honored by the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) last week for its coverage and promotion of the Owls' volleyball team as the organization announced a total of 62 regional and conference Grant Burger Media Award winners in men's, women's and beach volleyball.
Kenny Bybee serves as Assistant Director of Athletic Communications for Rice Volleyball and has been in that position since 2013 under the direction of Assistant AD of Athletic Communications Chuck Pool.
The AVCA recognized one athletic communications department for each of the 10 NCAA Division I regions, selecting Rice for the Southwest Region to honor its coverage of the Owls' magical 2019 season, which included the team's first-ever Top-25 ranking and a victory over Oklahoma in the NCAA Tournament.
Others honored include Creighton (East), Georgia Tech (East Coast), Iowa State (Midwest), Michigan (North), Purdue (Northeast), Colorado State (Pacific North), San Diego (Pacific South), Texas A&M (South) and Florida (Southeast).
The AVCA Grant Burger Media Award is an honor intended to recognize members of the media who have been involved in the advancement of the sport of volleyball through consistent coverage in all mediums. It is named in honor of Grant Burger, former Director of Sports Information and Associate Director of the AVCA (1988-92), whose hard work, innovative mind, knowledge and enthusiasm took the areas of media relations and publications at the AVCA to a higher level and increased awareness of the sport of volleyball nationwide.
