
Owls Finish Second At C-USA Championships

Therien Wins Mile; Cano-Minarro Named Co-Swimmer of the Meet
ATLANTA – Led by Claire Therien's individual title in the 1,650-freestyle, and Marta Cano-Minarro's selection as the Conference USA Co-Swimmer of the Meet, the Rice swim team finished in second place overall at the 2020 C-USA Championships on Saturday evening.
Top Meet Honors: Cano-Minarro was named C-USA Co-Swimmer of the Meet with FIU's Stephanie Hussey. The Owl sophomore from Spain won two C-USA individual tiles, was third in another event and swam on three Top 3 relays over the weekend. Cano-Minarro is the first Owl to earn at least a share of the award since Casey Clark in 2014.

Of note: Therien swam a season-best to win her first C-USA individual championship. She's the first Owl to win the mile since Erin Flannigan in 2015.
200 Backstroke : 4. Ellery Parish (1:58.81); 7. Zoe Spitz (2:01.06)
Of note: Both Owls swam season-best marks to carry the load for the team in the backstroke events.
100-Freestyle : 2. Kate Nezelek (49.23); 5. Lindsay Mathys (50.21); 9. Becca Evans (50.80); 10. Madison Howe (50.90); 11. Harper Gillentine (51.09).
Of note: Nezelek broke the five-year old school record to claim C-USA Silver.
200 Breaststroke : 3. Nicole Limberg (2:14.69); 4. Phillis Range (2:15.34); 7. Erin Vance (2:20.10); 12. Hannah Sumbera (2:21.08).
Of note: Limberg & Range swam the third and fourth-fastest times in school history in the finals. Limberg made the C-USA medal stand for the first time in her career.
200-Butterfly : 2. Lindsay Mathys (1:58.43); 3. Marta Cano-Minarro (1:58.54); 5. Brittany Bui (1:59.53); 7. Rebecca Brandt (2:01.40); 8. Shannon Jelley (2:05.36).
Of note: Mathys was the defending C-USA champ in this event and posted a gritty effort Saturday, fighting through some nagging injuries to take silver with a new collegiate best time.
400-Freestyle Relay : 2. Rice 3:19.30 (Kate Nezelek, Becca Evans, Marta Cano-Minarro, Lindsay Mathys).
Of note: Owl foursome records the fifth-fastest mark in school history and Nezelek almost broke her new school record in the 100 by swimming a 49.64 on the relay's lead leg.
