Owls Finish 5th Among 33 Scoring Teams Before Event Is Cancelled
CLEVELAND, Ohio – Led by Kate Nezelek's second place individual finish in the 50-yard freestyle, as well as her swimming the lead leg of the Owls' sprint relay team that also finished second overall, the Rice swimmers finished in fifth place among 33 scoring teams after Thursday's first and only day of action at the 2020 CSCAA National Invitational.
The national meet, unofficially nicknamed "The Swimming NIT," completed one of its originally scheduled three days of competition before canceling the remainder of the event. Rice head coach Seth Huston, who is completing his 18th season at the helm of the program, was happy with the Owls' effort – particularly on a distracting day of canceled competitions across the country.
"I am pleased with how our team raced today," coach Huston said. "We came back tonight (after morning prelims) knowing this was it, and had some great swims. We had a lot of place improvements from prelims. Our 200 freestyle relay and Kate's swims were definitely the highlights."
