Rice and Coastal Carolina have been named co-winners of the Reveal Suits National Team of the Week honor for games of the weekend of December 5, as selected by the Football Writers Association of America.
This is first time either school has received the award.
Rice was selected on the strength of a 20-0 shutout of previously undefeated and 15th ranked Marshall in Huntington, West Virginia on Saturday. The win was the first for Rice over a team ranked in the AP Top 25 since a 27-14 win over #21 BYU on November 11, 1997 at Rice Stadium and the first over a ranked team on the road since a 20-17 win over #8 Baylor in Waco on October 12, 1991. It marked the first time the Thundering Herd had been shutout at Joan C. Edwards Stadium since it opened in 1986, a span of 206 games and was the first shutout of a ranked opponent by the Owls since a 7-0 win over #16 Texas at Rice Stadium on October 22, 1960. It was also the first win by a team from Texas at Marshall (14 games).
Rice is the second Conference USA team to receive the FWAA's team of the week honor. The other ironically was Marshall, which was recognized after a 49-14 win over Middle Tennessee on an emotional day that featured a 50th anniversary tribute to its players lost in the 1970 plane crash.
All Division I FBS and FCS schools are eligible to be selected for the honor which was created as part of the FWAA Grantland Rice Super 16 Poll in 2002. Over the past 19 seasons, it has been awarded each week during the regular season by various committees that have included members of the FWAA All-America Committee, the association's board of directors and its past presidents.
