Olivari’s Career Day Leads Rice in 86-64 Victory

HOUSTON — Quincy Olivari scored a career-high 27 points and tied the second-most three-pointers in school history with seven as Rice defeated Houston Baptist, 86-64, Saturday night from Sharp Gym.
The Story
Rice came out firing. After scoring the first five points, HBU scored the next four. But back-to-back baskets by Cavit Ege Havsa sent Rice on an 8-0 run. The teams then traded baskets, going back-and-forth over the next five minutes. With Rice leading 27-19, the Owls stepped up its defense, forcing five Husky turnovers as an Olivari three-pointer sent the Owls on a 15-0 run to take a 42-19 lead with five minutes remaining in the first half. After an HBU basket, Chris Mullins hit a three-pointer and Rice closed the half scoring seven of the final 10 points to finish the last 10 minutes on a 22-5 run and take a 49-24 lead into halftime.
HBU scored the first six points of the second half, forcing a Rice timeout. Back-to-back three-pointers by Travis Evee and Olivari pushed the lead back to 25. However, the Owls went cold, making just two of its next 12 shots as Houston Baptist went on a 17-5 run to cut Rice's lead to 60-47 with 8:03 remaining. However, Olivari scored half of Rice's points in 22-4 run to put the game away.

Rice connected on 47.7% from the field, including 36.8% from three. Rice also connected on 71.4% from the free throw line. Houston Baptist connected on 50.0% from the floor, but was held to just 25.0% from three. Rice was outrebounded 36-to-30 and had 21 assists.
