Men’s Basketball to Host New Mexico

HOUSTON — After Saturday's postponed game at Houston, Rice will now host New Mexico this Sunday, December 13. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the game will be streamed at CUSAtv.
Scouting Rice
• Rice enters Sunday's game with a 4-0 record after defeating Houston Baptist last Saturday, 86-64.
• Sophomore Quincy Olivari leads the Owls with 14.3 points per game while connecting on a team-best 50.0% from three, which is third in Conference USA. He is also tied for third in the league in three-pointers made per game (2.8) and is seventh in field goal percentage (54.1%).
• Sophomore guard Travis Evee is second on the team with 13.3 points per game. He leads C-USA in assist-to-turnover ratio (6.0), is tied for third in three-pointers made per game (2.8) and is seventh in three-point field goal percentage (36.7%).
• Sophomore forward Max Fiedler is averaging nearly a double-double, scoring 13.0 points per game while pulling down 9.5 rebounds per game, good for third in the conference. He is also second in field goal percentage (64.7%) and tied for ninth in assists (3.5).
• Junior guard Chris Mullins is scoring 12.0 points per game while graduate forward Tre Clark is adding 7.3 points per game and 7.5 rebounds per game.
• Rice is averaging 87.8 points per game, which leads the league, while allowing 63.8.
• The Owls are connecting on 48.0% from the floor and 33.3% from three while holding their opponents to 40.2% from the field and just 28.9% from three.
• Rice is also outrebounding its opponents, 45.0-to-34.5 while leading Conference USA with 18.0 assists per game.
• Head coach Scott Pera begins his fourth season leading the Rice men's basketball program. He holds a record of 39-60.
Scouting New Mexico
• New Mexico begins its season after finishing 19-14 last year and 7-11 in the Mountain West Conference.
• UNM welcomes back six letterwinners from last year's squad, but just one starter. New Mexico also welcomes 12 newcomers
• The Lobos are looking to replace their top five scorers from last year.
• Senior guard/forward Makuach Maluach is their leading returning scorer (9.6 ppg) and rebounder (4.0.). He also the returning leader in assists (38), blocks (13), field goal percentage (48.0%) and free throw percentage (72.6%).
• Redshirt senior guard Keith McGee is the returning leader in three-pointers (31) and three-point field goal percentage (36.5%).
• Head coach Dr. Paul Weir begins his fourth season leading the New Mexico men's basketball program, where he holds a 52-47 (.525) record. He holds a record of 80-53 (.602) in four seasons as a collegiate head coach.
Rice-New Mexico Series History
• Rice and New Mexico will meet for the third time in the last six years and just the eighth time overall.
• The Lobos hold a 5-2 advantage in the series, though the teams have split the last two meetings.
• This will be just the second meeting at Tudor Fieldhouse. UNM won the initial meeting, 69-61 on Jan. 18, 1997.
• Four of the seven meetings came while the schools were members of the Western Athletic Conference.
Rice vs. the Mountain West Conference
• When the Owls face New Mexico, it will be just the 16th meeting against the Mountain West Conference.
• Rice is 5-10 all-time against the Mountain West.
• This will be the first meeting against the Mountain West since 2017-18, when the Owls faced UNLV and New Mexico.
