Owls Add Game with Lady Raiders
Rice announced an addition to its non-conference schedule on Wednesday, adding a road game at Texas Tech. The added game came following the cancellation of Rice's previously scheduled game on Dec. 2 at UT-Arlington, which was called due to COVID issues within the Mavericks' program. The matchup with the Lady Raiders will be the first meeting between the two teams since 2005 when the Owls knocked off then No. 14 Texas Tech, 73-70 at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Learning the Opponent
The Lady Raiders have started the season 2-0 under new head coach Krista Gerlich. Tech is led by two-time All-American and Oklahoma State transfer Vivian Gray, who is averaging 24 points per contest through two games. The Lady Raiders are coming off a 68-51 home victory over Houston Baptist.
Last Time Out
Behind a suffocating defensive performance in the fourth quarter, the Owls improved to 2-0 on the young season by recording a 66-54 road victory last Saturday afternoon at Little Rock. The Owls spoiled the Trojans season opener by allowing just six points over the final 10 minutes on two made field goals on 17 attempts. Rice placed four players in double-figures for a second straight game, which included a team-high 15 points off the bench in 21 minutes from junior guard Haylee Swayze.
Mulkey Named C-USA Player of the Week
Rice senior center Nancy Mulkey was selected the Conference USA Player of the Week after helping guide the Owls to a 2-0 start to the season, the conference office announced on Monday. Mulkey averaged 18 points on 61 percent shooting along with 9.5 rebounds and 3.0 blocks for the week. In the season opener versus Houston Baptist, Mulkey recorded a double-double with 23 points and 13 rebounds in just 24 minutes of action. She also connected on her first career three-pointer in Rice's 83-54 win over the Huskies. Three days later, Mulkey posted 13 points, grabbed six rebounds and blocked five shots in Rice's 66-54 road victory at Little Rock.
Bench Contributions
Rice's second unit has played a big role in the first two games, outscoring the opponent by a combined margin of 54-32, which includes a 34-point performance at Little Rock. Junior guard Haylee Swayze has scored in double-figures in both games and was the team's leading scorer (15 points) against the Trojans. Swayze currently leads all C-USA players in made three-pointers (6) and three-point percentage (66.7).
Extending the Streak
Dating back to last season the Owls have won seven consecutive games, tied for the 11th-longest active streak in the NCAA. Rice has won five straight games to conclude the 2019-20 season before the season was shutdown due to COVID. During Tina Langley's era with the Owls, Rice seven different winning streaks of six or more games.

Nancy Mulkey ranks third in Rice history in career blocks (177), 24 behind Jessica Kuster (201) for second place. The senior center currently ranks second in the NCAA among active players in both blocked shots (239) and blocked shot average (2.88).
