Owls Open C-USA Play at UTSA
Rice begins their bid for a third consecutive C-USA regular season title this weekend when they begin league play with a pair of games at UTSA. Conference USA's new schedule format will see two teams play each other in back-to-back games in the same venue this season. Rice received three votes in the AP Top 25 Poll for a second straight week after going 4-1 in non-conference action. The Owls have won eight of the last nine meetings against the Roadrunners.
Learning the Opponent
The Roadrunners are coming off a 71-47 loss at Sam Houston State back on Dec. 18. Adryana Quezada (16.0 ppg) leads UTSA in scoring and is also averaging a team-best 11.7 rebounds. The Roadrunners rank fourth in the NCAA in three-point field goal defense, allowing just 19.6 percent shooting from beyond the arc.
Last Time Out
The Owls suffered their first loss of the season on Dec. 20, dropping a hard-fought 57-53 battle at No. 10 Texas A&M. Junior guard Jasmine Smith led all players with a game and season-high 18 points for the Owls, making 8-of-12 shots from the field in 38 minutes of action. Senior center Nancy Mulkey also scored in double-figures for the Owls with 13 points to go along with a game-high three blocks. The Owls tied or outscored the Aggies in every quarter but a 20-8 advantage for A&M in the third period proved to be the difference.
Conference Dominance
The back-to-back C-USA regular season champion Owls have won 35 of their last 37 conference contests dating back to 2018.
Leading the League
Rice has dominated through their first four games, leading all Conference USA teams in: assists per game (17.8), total blocked shots (18), blocks per game (3.6), defensive rebounds per game (32.0), field goal percentage (49.8), field goal percentage defense (31.2), fewest personal fouls per game (15.0), rebounding margin (+9.6), scoring margin (+17.6), and three point percentage (45.0).
