Owls Face Ragin' Cajuns from Tudor
Due to the cancellation of their Dec. 11 games versus Texas Southern, the Rice Owls will be back in action on Wednesday for the first time in 11 days. The Owls are out to a 3-0 start and will be looking to improve to 4-0 for the first time since the 2017-18 season. Rice will be facing Louisiana for the first time since 1999.
Learning the Opponent
Louisiana dropped a 62-57 road contest at LSU on Monday evening, falling to 1-2 on the season. The Ragin' Cajuns have three players averaging double-figures in points, led by Ty'Reona Ducet (12.7 ppg). Doucet, along with junior Brandi Williams, were selected to the Sun Belt Preseason All-Conference Teams. Louisiana was picked to finish fourth overall in the Sun Belt after going 19-12 overall last season.
Last Time Out
Rice delivered their first win over a Power Five opponent in 14 years by defeating the Texas Tech Lady Raiders in convincing fashion, 81-62 last Saturday evening at the United Supermarkets Arena. Rice placed five players in double-figures in a game in which the Owls never trailed. The Owls previous win over a P5 program came back on Dec. 1, 2006 when they defeated then No. 10 Texas A&M, 79-66. The last time Rice defeated a P5 program on the road was Mar. 14, 1999 at Baylor in the WNIT.
Fitting Right In
While four of Rice's five starters returned this season, sophomore guard Katelyn Crosthwait joined the unit this year and has flourished. The Purcell, Okla. native is averaging 10.7 points, 6.7 rebounds (2nd on team) and is shooting 41 percent from three-point territory.
Bench Contributions
Rice's second unit has played a big role in the first three games outscoring the opponent by a combined margin of 83-41, which includes a 29-8 differential at Texas Tech. Junior guard Haylee Swayze has scored in double-figures in three consecutive games and is second the team in scoring (13.3). Swayze currently leads all C-USA players in three-point percentage (69.2%-17th in NCAA) and ranks third among league players in made three-pointers (9). Meanwhile, sophomore guard Destiny Jackson is coming off a career and team-best 15-point performance against the Lady Raiders.
Defending Home Court
The Owls enter play on Friday having won 12 straight at Tudor Fieldhouse, the 13th-longest active streak in the NCAA. Rice went 13-1 at home last season. Over the last three-plus seasons, Rice is 40-2 at home and have won 18 consecutive C-USA games at Tudor.
Extending the Streak
Dating back to last season the Owls have won eight consecutive games, the 10th-longest active streak in the NCAA. During Tina Langley's era with the Owls, Rice has recorded seven different winning streaks of six or more games.
