HUNTINGTON, W.V. — Rice was held to just 37.3% from the floor as the Owls fell in their Conference USA opener, 89-69, Thursday night at Cam Henderson Center.
How it Happened
Drew Peterson and Ako Adams started off the scoring with a pair of three-pointers. But the Owls missed their next five shots while committing five turnovers as Marshall went on a 14-2 run over the next five minutes. The teams then traded baskets as Rice pulled to within 18-16 midway through the first half. After a pair of Thundering Herd baskets, Peterson made a pair of free throws followed by a three-pointer to get the Owls within three points. But again, Marshall made a couple of baskets to push its lead to eight points. Adams made three-of-four free throws and Peterson had a dunk to pull Rice within five points. But Marshall used a 10-5 run to take its largest lead of the half, 41-31, with 1:51 to play. Back-to-back buckets from Chris Mullins and Adams cut the deficit to six, but the Herd made three-of-four free throws to close the half leading 44-35.
Two straight baskets to open the second half pushed Marshall's lead to 13 points. Rice came right back with a Trey Murphy III dunk and two Peterson free throws. After a Taevion Kinsey three-point play, Murphy's jumper made it a 10-point game. However, Marshall would make 12 straight baskets to seal the game and push its lead to as many as 25 points
The Stats
Rice was held to just 37.3% from the field and 28.6% from three. Marshall connected on 58.3% from the floor, including 66.7% in the second half, and was 34.8% from three. Marshall outrebounded the Owls, 41-to-26 and outscored them in the paint, 48-to-28.
What Scott Pera Had to Say
"All the credit goes to Marshall. I thought they played tremendous on both ends of the floor. They got a lot of easy baskets at the rim. They caused us problems on the offensive end. It was a really balanced, great game by them. It's pretty much that simple."
