THIS WEEK: The Rice soccer team is back on the road for two Conference USA league games this week. The Owls play at Middle Tennessee on Thursday (Sept. 26) at 7 pm. The match is scheduled for a broadcast by ESPN+. Rice then returns to Texas to face UTSA in San Antonio on Sunday (Sept. 29) at 1 pm.
QUICK ON THE OWLS (4-4-0): Rice has been battling through a challenging schedule. The Owls won the season opener on the road at Oral Roberts 2-1 (Aug. 22) before posting a convincing 3-0 victory over crosstown rival Houston (Aug. 25). On Aug. 29 SEC power Alabama scored a late goal to slip past the Blue & Gray 2-1. Rice split tournament matches in San Antonio on Sept 6-8, claiming a victory over Cleveland State and a loss vs. red hot South Florida. The Owls lost on the road to an SMU team that continues to post big results before dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker to undefeated Pac-12 power Oregon State in overtime. Last week the Owls had one of their grittiest performances of the year to defeat C-USA foe Charlotte 1-0. In 2019 the Rice soccer team returns seven of 11 starters from last season's squad that went 7-9-1 and advanced to the C-USA Tournament. The Owls return a total of 18 letterwinners from a year ago and welcome in a talented new recruiting class.
COACH'S CORNER: Rice soccer is under the direction of head coach Brian Lee, who is in his first season at the helm of the program. A 2018 finalist for National Coach of the Year and with 25 years of experience as a Division I head coach, Lee enters this week's games with a career record of 291-192-55. Lee's Rice coaching staff includes Megan Kinneman, Travis Curson and Allysha Chapman, all in their first year with the Owl program. Coach Lee's weekly video preview is available at the above link.
SERIES HISTORY VS. MIDDLE TENNESSEE: After five career meetings with Middle Tennessee the series is deadlocked 2-2-1. A year ago the Blue Raiders defeated Rice at Holloway Field in overtime, 3-2. The teams met for the first time in 2015 and ended up playing twice that year. In the 2015 season the squads tied 0-0 in Houston before the Middle Tennessee claimed a 1-0 win in the opening round of the conference tournament a few weeks later. The Owls also posted a 2-1 road win in Murfreesboro, Tenn., in 2016 and a 4-2 victory in Houston in 2017.
SERIES HISTORY VS. UTSA: Rice leads the all-time series with UTSA 8-1-0. The Owls are 5-0 vs. the Roadrunners when playing in Houston. Due to some odd quirks in the C-USA scheduling, Sunday's match is the first time for Rice to face the Roadrunners in San Antonio since 2016.
HAIL SENIORS!: A total of five Rice players have scored all eleven of the team's goals – and four of them have been seniors. Owl veterans Haley Kostyshyn, Louise Stephens, Lianne Mananquil and Erin Mikeska have led the Blue & Gray to the back of the opposing net (with Kostyshyn and Stephens scoring three times, Mikeska scoring twice and Mananquil once).
NEXT WEEK: After facing UTSA the Owls are back home on Oct. 6 for a C-USA match against UAB. Start time at Holloway Field is set for 1 pm. The match is Rice's lone outing of the week.
