Series Notes
• Baylor leads the all-time series 49-30-2, including a 5-0 mark as non-conference opponents, 27-29-19-1 in Houston and 19-9 at Rice Stadium. Baylor has won the last eight meetings overall and the last three at Rice Stadium.
• Rice's last two wins in the series came courtesy of placekicker Darrell Richardson. His 27-yard field goal with four seconds remaining gave Rice a 34-31 win in 1992. A year earlier, the Owls called upon Richardson for a late field goal for the win as the Owls upset the eighth ranked Bears 20-17
• From 1945 until Houston joined the SWC in 1976, the two schools annually closed out the regular season by facing each other. That tradition was interrupted only once, in 1963 when the Owls game at TCU was moved from November 23 to December 7 because of the assassination of President Kennedy.
Four in a Row
Saturday's game with Baylor will wrap up Rice's non-conference schedule for 2019. For the first time since 2010, the Owls played all four of their non-conference games to open the year, followed by their eight C-USA games.
On this Date
Rice opened the 1957 season with a 20-14 win over LSU at Rice Stadium. Coming off seasons of 2-7-1 and 4-6, the win set the tone for a season that ended with a SWC title and the Owls last berth in the Cotton Bowl. Rice would go on to defeat #17 Stanford at home the following week and later #12 Arkansas and #1 Texas A&M in consecutive weeks at home before closing out the run to the title with consecutive 20-0 shutouts of TCU and Baylor.
Blaze in the Backfield
Linebacker Blaze Alldredge moved into a tie for second in Conference USA with 5.5 tackles for loss after being credited with a career-high 4.5 vs. Texas. His game total vs. the Longhorns was one more than he recorded in his first season with the Owls in 2018 and were the most by an Owl since Zach Patt was credited with five at FIU in 2014. Alldredge's total was part of eight TFLs by the Owls, who have compiled 18 through the first three games. The Owls had a a total of 11 TFLs in the first three games of 2018. The Owls set the TFL tone from the first play of 2019. Five of Army's first 13 scrimmage plays were either for loss or no gain in the season opener.
Making the Most
Sixth-year senior Aston Walter is making the most of the additional year of eligibility he was granted by the NCAA. He led the Owls in rushing (170 yards) and touchdowns (3). He came into the year with no career touchdowns, but has found the end zone three times in the last two weeks. He scored his first career TD on a one-yard run against Wake Forest and then caught a pair of short scoring passes from Tom Stewart vs. Texas. He became the first Rice running back to have multiple touchdown receptions in a game since his twin brother Austin caught a pair vs. Prairie View A&M in 2016.
Next Up
The Owls close out their month of games in Houston next Saturday when they open their 15th season in Conference USA by hosting LA Tech for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
