Undefeated Owls Next Face Alabama Thursday Night
A record 534 Rice students were in attendance, and the Owl soccer team responded with a second-straight convincing result to move to 2-0-0 on the season. The Blue & Gray opened the scoring in the 21st minute with Mikeska converting on a header from close range on a free kick serve from Mijke Roelfsema. After intermission senior Haley Kostyshyn played a textbook give-and-go to Stephens on the left wing. Stephens, a Houston native, blasted away on the ball and found the back of the Cougar net on her only shot of the night. In the 88th minute Rice stretched the margin to 3-0 with Mikeska registering her second career two-goal game via a penalty kick.
Houston turned up the offensive pressure trying to rally in the second half, but senior goalkeeper Maya Hoyer kept the shutout alive with three big saves in the second stanza. Sophomore keeper Bella Killgore made her 17th-straight start between the pipes and notched a save in the first 45 minutes. Rice finished with an 11-9 lead in shots and held a 5-1 advantage in corner kicks.
The Owls are next in action on Thursday (Aug. 29) with a home match against SEC power Alabama. Start time at Holloway Field is set for 7 pm. The match feature a free Rice water bottle giveaway while supplies last.
