Fifth Owl to qualify for NCAA Women's Singles
Michaela Haet dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision to Katya Townsend of Texas A&M in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Women's Singles Championship at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Florida on Monday.
The meeting was a rematch between the two who faced off 16 days earlier during the Austin Regional of the NCAA team competition, with the 63rd ranked Haet winning in three sets over Townsend, who was ranked 52nd.
Haet was the Owls fifth NCAA singles qualifier in history and their first since 2016 when Katherine Ip won a pair of matches to become the program's third All-American.
The sophomore from Sydney, Australia was named the Conference USA Player of the year after leading the Owls back to the Conference USA title.
