Rice Drops Regular Season Finale to Charlotte

HOUSTON — A 15-0 Charlotte run late in the second half turned a four-point Rice lead into a 78-70 Charlotte victory, Saturday night in the regular season finale in Tudor Fieldhouse.
What Head Coach Scott Pera Had to Say
"We had opportunities to stretch (the lead) out in the second half. Give a lot of credit to (Charlotte). We ran into who we knew was a great play (in Jon Davis). We had no answers to stop him. Obviously, I'm not happy. Beating a team three times in a year is hard. Tonight there's disappointment. But, tomorrow, there will be excitement to try and go win a game Wednesday night."
The Story
Rice entered the second half trailing 33-30, but the Owls started the half strong, scoring the first eight points After a Charlotte three-point play, Rice went on a 9-2 run to take its largest lead of the half, 47-38, with 13:30 to play. However, Charlotte used a 15-2 run over the next 4:30 to take go ahead 51-49. After the teams traded baskets, Rice scored seven of the next nine points to lead 59-55 with 5:24 to play. But, the Owls were held scoreless over their next seven possessions as the 49ers went on a 15-0 run to take its largest lead of the game, 70-59, with 1:07 to play. Rice would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
The Stats
Rice was held to just 41.4% from the field and 31.6% from three. Charlotte connected on 47.3% from the floor and 33.3% from three. Rice hit 76.2% from the free throw line but was outrebounded, 38-to-32.

• Rice fell to 13-18 on the year and 8-10 in Conference USA.
• Rice is 7-5 all-time against Charlotte but the series is tied 3-3 in games played in Houston.
• Robert Martin led the Owls with 15 points and grabbed five rebounds.
• Ako Adams scored 14 points tied a career-high with three steals.
• With his two three-pointers, Adams passed Marcus Jackson (2016-17) and moved into a tie for 11th on the Rice single-season three-pointers list with 72.
• Chris Mullins had 13 points and had a game-high four assists.
• Mullins passed Michael Harris (2001-02) for sixth-place on the Rice freshman scoring list with 381 points.
• Mullins also passed Max Guercy (2012-13) for eighth place on the freshman assist list with 82.
• Mullins was 5-for-5 from the free throw line and has now hit his last 15 free throws.
• Jack Williams added 11 points and a team-high six rebounds.
• With three blocks Quentin Millora-Brown moved into a tie for fourth on the single-season blocks list and into second on the freshman blocks list with 37.
