BIRMINGHAM, AL - Rice junior Michelle Fokam captured her fifth career Conference USA title to highlight the Owls efforts Friday on day one of the C-USA Indoor Championships.
Fokam,
from Katy, Texas, won the event with her first attempt by soaring 6.11m (20-00.50), defending her indoor long jump title from last season. She'll look to sweep the long jump/triple jump titles for a third straight season tomorrow when she competes in the triple jump at 2 p.m.
Junior Zinedine Russell earned an additional eight points for the Owls by placing second (3601 points) in the pentathlon, achieving All-Conference honors for the first time in her career. A native of Kingston, Jamaica, Russell established a personal best mark in total points with a victory in the high jump (1.68m/5-06.00) and a third place result in the shot put (11.36m/37-0.25). She also placed fourth in the 60m hurdles with a PR time of 9.01.
Redshirt junior sprinter Hannah Jackson qualified for Sunday's finals in both the 200m dash and 60m dash, finishing first (23.66) and fourth (7.53), respectively.
Freshman distance runner Ryann Helmers used a late rally to finish fifth in the 5000m, her C-USA debut, earning four points with a time of 17:19.4. The Owls closed out the night with their distance medley relay team of Ashley Messineo, Marissa Topolski, Hannah Bablak, and Mary Claire Neal placing fourth (12:19.50) for an additional four points.
In other field events, junior Camille Little jumped seven spots from her seeding to place sixth (5.82m/19-01.25) in the long jump for three points. Senior Dheryl Batts improved upon her 10th place seed by finishing eighth (17.69m/58-00.50) in the weight throw with a PR to score one point. Redshirt junior Giulia Sportoletti also picked up a point for the Owls by placing eighth in the pentathlon with 3416 points.
"I'm so proud of the heart and effort our ladies competed with today," Rice head coach Jim Bevan said. "We are chipping away at getting all we can out of our opportunities in this meet. We're truly competing hard and with a lot of heart and we're looking forward to tomorrow."
Entering day two, the Owls lead the team rankings with 31 points through five scored events. Competition on Sunday gets going at 11 a.m. (CT) beginning with the women's high jump.
