Poor Shooting Dooms Rice at Florida Atlantic
2/16/2019 5:21:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BOCA RATON, Fla. — Rice was held to a season-low 26.7% from the floor as it fell at Florida Atlantic, 60-41, Saturday afternoon at FAU Arena.
What Head Coach Scott Pera Had to Say
"Obviously, (the game) comes down to our shooting performance, but we also had 11 turnovers at halftime. The second half we played with two. I thought our guys really battled all the way to the end. I'm proud of the effort. They kept fighting. We just couldn't make a shot tonight. (Florida Atlantic) played better and deserved to win."
The Story
Both teams came out cold, combining to miss their first nine shots before Quentin Millora-Brown made a layup. FAU scored six straight points and then the teams traded baskets, with Robert Martin hitting a three to pull Rice within 12-10 with 8:48 to play in the half. However, Rice made just one of its final 12 shots and Florida Atlantic closed the half on a 16-2 run to take a 28-12 lead at halftime. FAU scored six of the first eight points of the second half. The traded baskets, but with FAU leading 38-18, Rice went on a 10-0 run behind three-pointers from Trey Murphy III and Ako Adams to cut the deficit to 10 with 9:20 to play. However, Rice missed its next nine shots as Florida Atlantic went on a 15-0 run over the next five minutes to push its lead 25 points and put the game away.
