Owls Win 14th Straight, Defeat FIU 76-44

Rice remains unbeaten in C-USA play
HOUSTON – The Rice Owls women's basketball team added to their school record winning streak by cruising to their 14th straight victory, defeating the FIU Panthers 76-44 Thursday evening at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Rice (21-3, 12-0), who garnered votes for a third straight week in the AP Top 25 Poll, tied their largest margin of victory (34) this season by placing three players in double-figures while setting season-highs in both assists (22) and total rebounds (49). The Owls shot 51 percent from the floor, the team's third straight effort of 50 percent or better, and 10 different players registered points.
The Owls continued to build upon their greatest start in program history and kept alive the second-longest active winning streak in the nation, trailing only Oregon (16 straight).
Senior guard Nicole Iademarco and freshman guard Haylee Swayze led the Owls with 15 points apiece while junior guard Erica Ogwumike notched her 14th double-double of the season with 11 points and 12 rebounds in just 22 minutes. Senior guard Lauren Grigsby contributed nine points off the bench and led all players with a career-high with six assists.
The Owls made 10-of-26 shots from beyond the arc and outscored the Panthers (4-21, 1-11) in points in the paint (34-16), points off turnovers (18-8), second chance points (10-7) and bench scoring (34-26). Defensively the Owls held FIU to just 31 percent shooting in the wire-to-wire victory.
"I liked the way we prepared this week as a team," Rice head coach Tina Langley said. "I thought we came in very focused and knew our opponent well and that's why we were able to get off to such a great start. Tonight everybody, when they were on the floor, played as hard as they could."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Quarter 1
The Owls outscored FIU 24-10 in the quarter and closed the final 3:56 on a 14-4 run, which included a pair of three-pointers made from Swayze. Rice outscored FIU 10-2 in points in the paint and seven different Owls registered points.
Quarter 2
After scoring five points in the opening quarter, Iademarco helped the Owls break the game open with eight more points in the second period. Rice used a 23-7 advantage to extend their lead to 47-17 entering the break. The Owls held FIU to 3-of-16 shooting and ended the half on a 23-2 run in the final eight minutes.
Quarter 3
Ogwumike led the Owls with seven points and Rice outscored FIU 19-14 in the quarter, shooting 58 percent from the floor and knocking down three more three-pointers. The lead grew to as much as 66-28 when Swayze connected from deep with1:35 remaining.
Quarter 4.
In the final period, Rice was outscored 14-10 but redshirt freshman Temi Alao was able to contribute six points to go along with four rebounds in just 10 minutes of action.
