Millora-Brown’s Big Game Not Enough as Rice Falls to FIU, 86-65

MIAMI, Fla. — Freshman forward Quentin Millora-Brown recorded his third double-double, scoring 14 points and grabbing a career-high 16 rebounds, but it was not enough as Rice fell to FIU, 86-65, Thursday evening at Ocean Bank Convocation Center.
What Head Coach Scott Pera Had to Say
"Obviously, (33 turnovers) is a terrible number for us to try to compete on road. We knew that (FIU) was going to pressure us, try to speed us up and play at a pace that would get us a little out of control. They certainly did that. They did a really good job and deserved to win the game. From the start, they were the aggressor. They were the better team and they deserved to win."
The Story
FIU scored the first five points of the game. Millora-Brown got Rice on the board with a jumper and after two Josh Parrish free throws the Panthers scored four straight points. The teams then traded baskets over the next 2:12. Rice went on a 10-3 run to take its only lead of the game, 18-17, but FIU answered with an 11-2 run of its own. Two straight Rice baskets pulled the Owls within five points. However, FIU scored eight of the next 10 points to take a 36-25 lead. A layup by Trey Murphy III followed by two Robert Martin free throws pulled Rice within seven points before FIU scored the final six points of the half to head into the break with a 42-29 lead. The Panthers pushed their lead to 16 in the first three minutes of the second half. Rice cut the deficit to 55-45 just over four minutes later, but a 9-3 run pushed the lead back to 16. The Owls then cut the lead to 64-56 with 7:12 to play. However, FIU went on a 13-2 run to take a 77-58 lead and put the game away.
The Stats
Rice shot 44.4% from the field but was just 23.1% from three. FIU shot 44.1% from the floor and 29.6% from three. Rice connected on 77.8% from the free throw line and outrebounded the Panthers, 42-to-29. However, FIU scored 38 points off 33 Rice turnovers.
