Peterson’s Career-High Not Enough as Rice Falls to Lamar, 73-60
12/7/2019 8:20:00 PM | Men's Basketball
BEAUMONT, Texas — Drew Peterson scored a career-high 19 points, but Rice was held to just 34.0% from the field as it dropped its non-conference road finale, 73-60, at Lamar Saturday afternoon from Montagne Center.
The Story
Rice scored the first five points of the game on two Chris Mullins free throws and a Trey Murphy III three-pointer. However, Rice missed eight of its next 10 shots over the next 10 minutes as Lamar went on a 16-4 run to take a 16-9 lead. The teams then traded three-pointers over the next 2:30 as Rice pulled to within 19-18. After a Lamar basket, Chris Mullins made one-of-two free throws. However, Rice made just one of its final seven shots as the Cardinals closed the half on a 14-4 run to take a 35-23 lead at the break. The teams traded baskets over the first three minutes before Lamar scored eight of 12 points to take its largest lead of the game, 46-30. Four minutes later, with the Cardinals leading 52-36, Rice went on a 7-0 run, capped off by a Trey Murphy III three-pointer to pull to within 52-43 with 8:08 to play. The teams then traded five-point runs of the next three minutes. But Lamar scored 11 of the next 17 points to push its lead to 14 points. Rice would get no closer than nine points the rest of the way.
The Stats
Rice was held to just 34.0% from the field but shot 39.3% from three. Lamar connected on 47.4% from the floor but just 22.2% from three. Rice and Lamar also tied in rebounds, 36 apiece.
What Scott Pera Had to Say
"(Lamar) did a great job defensively of taking us out of what we wanted to do. We lost our patience. We lost our discipline and because of how they played defense, we were rushed. I thought we took some ill-advised shots. Obviously, at halftime we were 0-for-10 from two. So we struggled offensively. We turned the ball over too much. But all credit goes to them. They played a better game."
