NASSAU, Bahamas — Rice used a 13-4 run late in the second half to turn a two-point lead into a 75-69 victory and defeat Milwaukee in the opening game of the Islands of the Bahamas Showcase, Friday afternoon at the Baha Mar Convention Center.
The Story
Rice came out hot, making seven of its first 11 shots to jump out to an 18-10 lead just over eight minutes into the game. After a pair of Milwaukee free throws, Rice made three of four from the charity stripe to take its largest lead of the half, 21-12, midway through the first half. The Panthers then scored eight of the next 10 points to cut the deficit to three points. The teams traded baskets over the next four minutes before a Quincy Olivari three-pointer pushed Rice's lead back to nine points. Milwaukee then went on an 8-0 run to pull within one point, but Josh Parrish made a pair of free throws and then drove down for a dunk to give Rice a 42-38 lead at the break. Rice began the second half scoring eight of the first 11 points. But a 9-0 Milwaukee run tied the game at 50. The Owls scored eight of the next 10 points before the Panthers cut the deficit to 58-56 with 7:09 to play in the game. But Rice connected on six straight free throws as it went on a 13-4 run over the next six minutes to give it its largest lead and ice the game.
The Stats
Rice shot 50.0% from the field and 34.8% from three. Milwaukee was held to just 35.2% from the floor and 24.0% from three. Rice also outrebounded the Panthers, 41-to-37.
What Scott Pera Had to Say
"I'm really proud of our effort and togetherness. Our guys are maturing in front of our eyes. They're really connected. Their defensive mentality is where we have been pushing it towards being. They made tremendous plays and got a lot of stops when we needed them. Our transition game was good. We did a great job of getting to the free throw line. I'm really happy for guys like Josh (Parrish), Quincy (Olivari) and Zach (Crisler). Guys were just coming in and making plays that hadn't been playing a ton of minutes. That's where we're different this year. Having that depth is what a good program needs."
Notes
• Rice improves to 5-2 on the year.
• Rice tied the all-time series with Milwaukee, 1-1.
• This was Rice's first-ever win against the Horizon League. The Owls are now 1-3 all-time against the Horizon.
• Ako Adams scored a game and season-high 18 points. He connected on 5-of-7 from three.
• Adams' five three-pointers give him 163 in his career, passing Austin Ramljak (2012-14) and Egor Koulechov (2015-17) and tying Connor Frizzelle (2008-12) for seventh-place on Rice's all-time list.
• Robert Martin scored 12 points and grabbed nine rebounds.
• Josh Parrish scored a season-high 10 points and tied a season-high with four rebounds.
• Max Fiedler grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds. It is his third double-digit rebound game of the season.
