Presented to the best defensive player in college football
Rice junior linebacker Blaze Alldredge has been added to the watch list for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy, which is awarded each year to the best defensive player in college football and is presented by the Charlotte Touchdown Club.
Alldredge leads the Owls with 53 tackles and 11.5 tackles for loss through six games. His 11.5 tackles for loss are currently second in the nation while his average of 1.92 per game ranks seventh. His total is the most by an Owl since Brian Womac finished with 22 in 2017 and the most by a Rice linebacker since Rashad Reynolds totaled 15 in 1997. Alldredge has at least one TFL in each of the last five games, including a career-best 4.5 against Texas which was the most by an Owl since 2014. He has been credited with 10 or more tackles in each of the last two games. In his last nine games dating back to last season, Alldredge has amassed 84 tackles, including 12.5 for loss.
Created in 1993 by the Football Writers Association of America, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy was established to complement the Heisman Trophy Award, which at the time had never been presented to a defensive player.
The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce five finalists for the award on Nov. 20.
The Bronko Nagurski Trophy winner will be chosen from those five finalists. The FWAA All-America Committee, after voting input from the association's full membership, selects a 26-man All-America Team and eventually the Nagurski Trophy finalists. Committee members, by individual ballot, select the winner they regard as the best defensive player in college football.
