THIS WEEK: The Rice soccer team is back home for a Conference USA league game this weekend. The Owls welcome UAB to Holloway Field on Sunday (Oct. 6) at 1 pm.
FUN & GAMES AT HOLLOWAY FIELD: Sunday's game against UAB is Rice's annual Hometown Heros' Day. All law enforcement officers and first responders can receive a free ticket at the gate. Rice students (with I.D.) are encouraged to arrive early to receive a free giveaway of a Rice Bucket Hat (while supplies last). After the game the Owls will sign autographs and take photos with fans.
QUICK ON THE OWLS (5-4-1, 2-0-1 C-USA): Rice has been battling through a challenging schedule. The Owls won the season opener on the road at Oral Roberts 2-1 (Aug. 22) before posting a convincing 3-0 victory over crosstown rival Houston (Aug. 25). On Aug. 29 SEC power Alabama scored a late goal to slip past the Blue & Gray 2-1. Rice split tournament matches in San Antonio on Sept 6-8, claiming a victory over Cleveland State and a loss vs. red hot South Florida. The Owls lost on the road to an SMU team that continues to post big results before dropping a 2-1 heartbreaker to Pac-12 power Oregon State in overtime. The Owls had one of their grittiest performances of the year to begin C-USA action with a 1-0 victory over Charlotte. Last week the Owls picked up four points in a pair of C-USA road games. Rice rallied from a 2-0 deficit to tie Middle Tennessee 2-2. The Blue & Gray then turned around and won at UTSA 1-0.
COACH'S CORNER: Rice soccer is under the direction of head coach Brian Lee, who is in his first season at the helm of the program. A 2018 finalist for National Coach of the Year and with 25 years of experience as a Division I head coach, Lee enters this week's games with a career record of 292-192-56. Lee's Rice coaching staff includes Megan Kinneman, Travis Curson and Allysha Chapman, all in their first year with the Owl program. Coach Lee's weekly video preview is available at the above link.
SERIES HISTORY VS. UAB: Rice leads the all-time series with UAB 7-5-0. Due to some odd quirks in the C-USA scheduling Sunday's match is the Blazers' first trip to Holloway Field since the 2015 season – a year before any of the current Owls on the roster were even on the team. Rice is 4-1 when hosting UAB. The Blazer's lone win over the Owls at Holloway Field was in 2009.
NEXT WEEK: After hosting UAB the Owls are back on the road on Oct. 13 for a C-USA match against Louisiana Tech. Start time is set for 1 pm in Ruston, La. The match is Rice's lone outing of the week.
