Evans Sound & Solid Winning 50-Free, Anchoring Two Rice Relays
HOUSTON - Sophomore Becca Evans won one individual event and anchored two relays to help lead the Rice swim team to the meet title of the program's Fall Splash Invitational Saturday afternoon on campus at the Competition Pool.
Rice had already built a comfortable 122-point lead through the first nine events of the two-day Invitational on Friday and effectively held the margin over Saturday's second half of the meet. The Owls registered a final total of 971 points, 118 higher than second place ACC power Georgia Tech (853). Crosstown foe Houston was third (812), followed by the University of the Incarnate Word (446.5) and Air Force (289.5).
Evans joined Kate Nezelek, Phillis Range and Brittany Bui to open Saturday's events with a Rice win in the 200-yard medley relay (1:45.92). The sophomore from Pittsford, New York, later gave the Owls a big lift by winning the 50-freestyle over a starting field of 43 entries. Her winning time of 24.18 was a narrow nine one-hundredths of a second faster than second place, but Evans wasn't quite finished. She returned to anchor the Owls' 400-free relay that placed second overall with time of 3:30.71.
Junior Hannah Sumbera was sound and solid scoring for the Owls with a second place in the 200-individual medley (2:06.97). Brittany Bui was third, while Rebecca Brandt was fourth, out of 27 entries in the 200-butterfly with times of 2:05.02 and 2:06.89, respectively. True freshman Shannon Campbell finished fourth among a starting field of 30 swimmers in the 500-freestyle (5:02.02).
The Rice swim team is back in action next weekend at the Dual-A-Pool-Ooza. This year's edition of the annual triple-dual meets against FIU, Denver and Tulane is set for Oct. 18-19 in Miami, Fla.
