Rice matches best 20-game start in program history
HOUSTON – Erica Ogwumike scored a game-high 22 points to go along with 15 rebounds while Nancy Mulkey added an additional 18 points to help lead the Owls to their 10th straight victory, defeating Charlotte 61-51 Thursday evening at Tudor Fieldhouse.
Rice (17-3, 8-0), who was receiving votes in this week's AP Top 25 Poll, won their 11th straight game at home dating back to 2018 and recorded their eighth consecutive C-USA victory by double-digits. The Owls' 10-game winning streak stands alone as the third-longest in program history, trailing only the 12 straight wins in each of the 2003-04 and 2004-05 seasons.
Ogwumike notched her 10th double-double of the season by making 7-of-17 shots from the field and 6-of-6 at the free throw line in 37 minutes of action. Mulkey scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half and made 8-of-10 field goal attempts to go along with two blocks in 33 minutes.
Defensively the Owls held the 49ers to just 37 percent shooting, marking the 11th straight game Rice has held their opponent to below a 40 percent rate from the field.
"I'm proud of how we found a way to win tonight against a Charlotte team that really battled us hard," Rice head coach Tina Langley said. "Our execution was key down the stretch and I liked the way we stayed together."
