Owls Next Return Home For Weekend Matches
Rice is now 1-3-0 on the season. Alabama improved to 3-2-0 overall.
Alabama scored the first goal of the contest in the 30th minute and had a 1-0 lead at the intermission. The game was still just a narrow 1-0 margin until the 71st minute, but Alabama added a quick pair of scores to go up 3-0 by the 78th minute. Rice battled to get on the scoreboard in the 82nd minute as senior Darcy Mickalow recorded her first goal of the season. Alabama added two more late to the board to stretch the final margin to 5-1. Playing at home Alabama held a 19-11 advantage in shots, a 7-3 margin in corner kicks and a 10+ difference in fouls (17-7).
"The first half we were playing well, with a high level of energy and we were very competitive," said Rice head coach Nicky Adams. "I was pleased with the first 60 minutes. We had some opportunities to put the ball away, but we didn't. We knew Alabama was very good on set pieces, and we gave up four goals on set pieces. We want to get back to work to get better. We have more tough games this weekend and then conference games after that."
The Owls have wrapped-up the weekend road swing and are next back at home on Friday to host one of the top tournaments of the young season. Memphis, Tulsa and Louisiana join the Owls for the four-team home tournament to be held at Holloway Field Sept. 7 & 9. The first game of Friday's action features Louisiana and Tulsa at 5 pm. Rice hosts Memphis in a 7:30 pm clash.
