Owls Return To Host Tulsa Sunday At Holloway Field
The Owls controlled the tempo in the first 18 minutes of the contest, holding a 4-1 advantage in shots with near-goal after corner kick where Lianne Mananquil's shot attempt was corralled for a save by Memphis keeper Elizabeth Moberg. The Tigers opened the scoring in the 21st minute as Marie Levasseur made a long run down the left sideline and the ball into traffic in front of the Rice goal. Midfielder Samantha Murphy headed the ball to the back of the Rice net for a 1-0 lead.
Memphis held a 9-4 advantage in shots in the second half, and tallied the game's second goal in the 69th minute with a shot and score by Clarissa Larisey. Rice freshman goalkeeper Bella Killgore tied a career high with nine saves but the Owl offense could not find the back of the Tigers' net. Rice is now 1-4-0 on the season. Memphis improved to 5-1-0 overall.
The contest was part of a four-team weekend tournament with Tulsa and Louisiana playing the first game of the soccer twinbill where the Golden Hurricane claimed a 3-1 win over the Ragin' Cajuns. Weekend tournament action concludes at Holloway Field on Sunday (Sept. 9). Memphis is scheduled to play the Ragin' Cajuns at 12 noon. Rice hosts Tulsa, a longtime soccer rival for the Owls, at 2:30 pm.
