HOUSTON -- Rice sophomore Michelle Fokam won the Conference USA Outdoor long jump title in dramatic fashion to highlight day three of the Owls' performance at the C-USA Championships at Wendel D. Ley Track.
Fokam, from Katy, Texas, won her third C-USA individual title of the year (two indoors) by saving her best for last on Saturday. On her sixth and final attempt, Fokam set a personal record with a winning leap of 6.46m (21-02.50). That mark currently ranks 12th in the nation and fifth in the West region.
Fokam will look to complete a sweep of the indoor/outdoor long jump and triple jump titles when she partakes in the triple jump Sunday at 4 p.m.
Zinedine Russell, who placed fifth in the heptathlon on Friday, earned the Owls an additional three team points on Saturday by setting a new PR in the high jump with a leap of 1.71m (5-07.25) and a sixth place finish. Also in jumps, Camille Little placed sixth (5.96m) in the long jump for three points.
In the final event of the night, Maddie Forbes (11:18.15) and Natalie Goddard (11:23.13) placed sixth and seventh in the 3000m steeplechase, respectively, to total five team points.
The Owls also had five qualifiers for Sunday's finals, with two of those slots going to sophomore sprinter Hannah Jackson. The Crowley, La. native had the top time (11.56) in the 100m dash while also earning the top spot in the 200m dash (23.39).
Elsa Racasan (6th-4:37.22) and Mary Claire Neal (11th-4:43.37) each earned spots in the finals of the 1500m while Hannah Bablak set a new PR of 2:12.83 to place seventh and qualify for Sunday's finals.
As a team the Owls sit in third place with 41 total points, trailing FIU (47) and Southern Miss (42).
Day four of the C-USA Championships will begin Sunday at 3 p.m., starting with the shot put.
