HOUSTON -- The University of Houston scored the lone run of the game in the bottom of the seventh inning and hung-on for a narrow 1-0 win over the visiting Rice baseball team Tuesday evening at UH's Schroeder Park.
The season-long three-game series for the annual Silver Glove Trophy is now level at one win apiece. Game three between the crosstown rivals is scheduled for May 15 at the neutral site of Constellation Field, the minor league home of the Sugar Land Skeeters.
Three Houston pitchers combined to hold Rice to just two hits, but the Owls also had base runners in six of the first seven innings and men in scoring position three times. The Blue & Gray left the bases loaded in both the top of the second and seventh. The team could not get the big hit, or that final 90-feet, and finished the night going 0-for-5 with runners in scoring position.
Five Rice pitchers combined to hold UH to just six hits. The Cougars led off the seventh with a Grayson Padget single and a Cooper Coldiron sacrifice moved him into scoring position. He went to third on a balk and scored on a RBI single by Connor Hollis.
Rice is now 15-20 on the season. Houston improved to 20-12 overall.
Rice's taxing road swing continues through Sunday (April 15). The Owls next return to Conference USA league play with a three-game weekend road series at Middle Tennessee beginning on Friday. Start time against the Blue Raiders is set for 6 pm in Murfreesboro, Tenn. Rice is not back home at Reckling Park until April 20.
